Old Blowers Music Performance - January 2023

Old Blowers Music Performance - January 2023

At Greenfield Primary School we are passionate about music and we currently have more than 30 children accessing small group music lessons in school provided by Barnsley Music Services. These lessons are for a range of different instruments: French horn, piano, clarinet, keyboard, violin, guitar and drums. Our Y3/4 children all also receive a block of whole class tuition from Matt Townsend (Barnsley Music Services) for the ukulele.

On Thursday 26th January, we welcomed The Old Blowers to our school and they performed a range of pieces and talked about their love of music.   Mrs Wright was especially excited about this visit as Mr Charlie Brammer - one of the trombonists in The Old Blowers - taught her GCSE music at Kingstone Senior School and she played the saxophone in the school band.  Mrs Wright joined the band for the morning and it was lots of fun!

Our children absolutely loved the performance! They were singing and clapping along and there was lots of audience participation.  Mr Francis currently has some spaces available for brass lessons on a Friday so please get in touch with the school office or Mrs Wright if you would like more information.

The Old Blowers group was established in November 2016. The idea of creating this group was to give members the chance to learn all about the rudiments of music from the absolute beginning. Furthermore, members were given the opportunity to learn to play a brass instrument.

The ethos behind this was to follow up on medical evidence which suggested that learning music or taking up a new language would help to stave off the onset of dementia! The group is 12 strong and are now playing music, an astonishing achievement in such a short space of time.
